Skilled Nursing Care at OHOW: Making the Difference Before, During, and After Surgery

Every year, Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin celebrates National Nurses Week (May 6-12) to celebrate and thank our nursing teams for the important work they do every day. Their skilled nursing care plays an important role in our patient satisfaction, and we are so thankful for their tireless work to meet the needs of our patients, staff, and physicians. We appreciate them not only for their medical skills but also for the compassionate way they put their skills to use.

Our nurses go above and beyond for patient satisfaction before, during, and after surgery. Their work helps create “The OHOW Difference,” our higher standard of care that sets us apart from other facilities.

Nursing Care Begins Before Surgery

Before any surgical procedure at OHOW, patients attend a Pre-Surgery Evaluation. At this time, our nursing educators provide patients with all of the information needed to arrive ready for surgery and plan a successful recovery.

During pre-surgery education, we involve the entire care team as well as the patient’s family to ensure the patient is prepared for discharge. It’s a time for the patient to become more informed on their procedure, ask any questions, and ease any pre-surgery nerves. Our nurses go above and beyond to make your preoperative planning simple to put your mind at ease.

“From the moment I stepped in the front door for my preoperative appointment to leaving the day after surgery, my experience [at OHOW] was fantastic! The staff is personable, informative, and caring!” patient Jandell H. said of their experience.

Skilled Nursing Care Is Invaluable During Surgery

During your procedure, our surgical nurses assist in producing superior outcomes for our patients. Because our sole focus is on orthopedics, our staff are skilled experts in delivering care for orthopedic patients.

Should your procedure require an overnight stay, our nurses are all dedicated to treating similar conditions, making them experts in the best way to deliver you the care you require. While you’re in the care of our inpatient nursing teams, you can rest assured that you are in the hands of skilled, caring professionals.

“My experience was great. As a nurse myself, I expect a certain level of care. The staff did not disappoint me. Their level of professionalism and respect for me as a patient was evident throughout my procedure,” patient Katherine N. said of their experience.

Excellence in Nurse-To-Patient Ratio

In addition to our staff’s dedication to orthopedics, our nurses also have the opportunity to provide a higher quality of care due to our excellent nurse-to-patient ratio. This means we usually limit our nurses to two patients per nurse and guarantee only three patients per nurse, even on our busiest days. Being responsible for fewer patients allows our nurses to spend extra time in rooms, answer questions, and discuss recovery.

“Such a great group of nurses to make a painful experience more pleasant,” patient Tim M. said of their experience.

Our nurses’ attention to individual care makes an outsized difference in patient satisfaction and positive outcomes. This means our nurses have more time to focus on you, the patient. This excellent nurse-to-patient ratio ensures nurses can help patients with needs and requests; as a result, patient satisfaction increases. We sincerely appreciate our patients and want to make them as comfortable as possible during their stay. Adequate time helps nurses not only meet patients’ needs but to exceed their expectations.

“These people care! Every person I met was nice, friendly, and really cared about the patients. Everyone was very professional and very good at their jobs! The nurses were there immediately if I needed anything! Everything during my stay here went above and beyond what I had hoped,” patient Pete S. said.

Quality Care Beyond Surgery

Following your surgery and stay at OHOW, the excellence in nursing care continues. Every patient who leaves our facility receives a follow-up call from the nurse that discharged them. This continuity of care ensures your recovery progresses smoothly and your care continues throughout your recovery journey.

“Every part of my stay was very professional. The staff was very friendly and kept me informed about each part of my pre-op, what the surgery entailed, and what to expect post-surgery. The follow-ups after I went home were thorough as well,” patient Robert T. said.

In addition to follow-up calls, every patient receives a personalized thank-you card in the mail signed by each nurse who participated in their care. Within the card is the opportunity to give a call to our Chief Nursing Officer with any comments or suggestions specific to your hospital experience. This opportunity for follow-up ensures that we are continually improving our quality of care from patient to patient.

“I have been very pleased with my experience at both the clinic and hospital. Everyone from the front desk workers at my initial contact through my actual surgery has been superb. I’ve also made a few follow-up calls and have received prompt responses. Keep up the good work,” said patient Robert K.
